Jai Ho : A. R. Rahman Masters the iPad, Rahman now the master of tech

A R Rahman has laid his hands on the latest in tech innovations. You can leave it him to be right on the cutting edge of music production, first it was the synthesizer workstation now the I Pad, a total eight of them!!! Not just one.

Apparently when Rahman’s flight arrived from India to New York at 4am on Monday, he and his staff went straight to the 24/7 Apple store on 5th avenue to buy the tablet. Apple as a rule does not sell more than 2 to 1 person, so Rahman got an entire entourage to help him out. “I love this program, Bebot – Robot Synth.”, he said. He demonstrated the program with an original song, on-the-fly, genius I say!

Every finger-touch presented an auditory note, gestures up the pad controlled volume and intensity. The horizontal movement changed the tone. He seemed to have mastered the instrument that is Bebot, calling it a “polyphonic theremin.” He modestly signed off with, “I’m getting used to it still.” Aww.. humility with greatness, that’s what makes people great does’nt it ?

[ad#Adsense Wide] Rahman said that his Studio has a lot of Apple products and he’ll use the Mixing application in the Pad to control his Pro Tools rig. And if you were in the States at this time you’d see him pulling off all the technological stunts live as he has just the North American leg of “The Journey Home Tour”. Check out the video of Him on the iPad here.

Apparently Rahman’s Joy for Music does not end there. A. R. Rahman is a lucky guy. Not only has he blown away his competition as a composer/producer/artist, he’s brought in a tour staff that is pushing the limits of stage technology for his “A. R. Rahman Jai Ho Concert: The Journey Home World Tour.”

In fact, the work that is being done has actually never been done before. “We’re going to point projectors on [the set] to do what’s called projection mapping,” says tour, video designer Bob Bonniol. “We’re going to use projection on top of the set to make the set appear in as many ways as you can imagine. You can make it appear to be shifting and changing shape. Or you can give it an appearance of vegetation growing all over it.” Of course all this video makes the lighting tricky too. Designer Peter Morrison laments “we can’t light this like a rock show. This is going to be very theatrical and very dynamic.”
