Necessity is the mother of all inventions, the quote is as good as any, when it comes to apartments and the inclusions of all the amenities within it. Then, there is also the innovation in really small spaces. I mean if you ever walk into an IKEA store you will know what I mean, their home designs for spaces start from 55 Sq. Ft, right through the biggest. And what makes IKEA designs great are the multi utility spaces that they are able to manifest from the existing structure and provide versatility to the space and functionality to their furniture. You should definitely see the IKEA online catalog for ideas when designing furniture, you can check it out here.

World over cities are getting cramped and it is in the most cramped cities that innovation is at its most healthy. Take Japanese cities as an example and we all know about Japanese Innovation. Anyway in one of these cramped cities i.e Hong Kong Architect Gary Chang had to figure out some way to deal with the tiny apartments. Using a series of ingeniously-designed moving walls, (like some IKEA Furniture or the Transformers) he has turned his 344-square foot home into a virtual mansion. He is able to provide 24 different configurations for his tiny abode with the sliding walls and doors.
The video above will give a great illustration of the working of the walls. It is as easy as opening or closing curtains. The mirrors on the ceilings seem to be designed to hide the tracks or channels where the doors move. The efficiency has to be certainly admired, but definitely if you are a person used to living and working in open spaces this is still a bit too cramped for your liking. However the winner in this is definitely Innovation.
