Google TV – Is giving a complex to my present TV

We are constantly surrounded by 3 screens through our daily lives, the Mobile which is now the the fixed screen that we carried around, the laptop or desktop, that we constantly use to get our information from at home and at the office and the third screen which is the Television which we see at home for all the entertainment and news at home. The presence of an entity over one or more screens their significance in our lives improves, when some one makes the leap into the third screen especially someone like Google, it is something that the world should take note of. Google’s presence on the laptop and desktop are unshakable, they are steadily working their way around the mobiles through Android and on May 30 they just announced that they are now going to release their foray into the third screen, the TV with Google TV.

Known for their bizzare business models of providing services to the internet for free, it is anyones guess what we might get to expect from Google TV. What is Google TV? It’s not a single gadget but a platform that will run on TV sets, Blu-ray players, set-top boxes and possibly tablet computers. The technology is  backed by big names, including Google (obviously), Sony, Best Buy, Dish Network and Logitech. The devices will run Google’s vaunted Chrome browser and Flash Player 10.1, which means users can enjoy the full Web on their TVs and play videos from Hulu or YouTube and stream from NetFlix, Blockbuster or other providers. But you’ll need to keep your existing cable or satellite service since initial Google TV devices are not expected to have built-in tuners. The video here should tell you more about Google TV.

Google TV builds upon Android technology and should allow devices to run Android phone apps that don’t rely on actual phone hardware. That also means an Android phone may work as a TV remote, allowing you to program TV schedules, record, change channels and possibly more. Logitech may even be working on a set-top box that will let other smart phones like the Apple iPhone control a Google TV device.

For the past decade, those of us who grew up with computers have had no choice but to sit on the couch with an uncomfortably hot laptop while watching TV at the same time. It’s really become an annoyance and the conglomerate cable/satellite providers never saw any reason to make a change since they were already getting fat profits from TV and internet service while keeping them separate entities. But along comes the ever-disrupting Google gathering its own band of partners to make the television experience very much different.

The ability to use the web and TV at the same time? Check. An input device that I can use to do this? Check. Apps for television? Certainly. Integration with my next Android-powered phone? Well, of course. Looks like my TV is getting an inferiority complex as I am writing this post itself.
