Things not to do online when drunk

Drunk texting is a bit of a disease, in fact after I saw some text messages that some of my friends have received I really consider that it is something that can damage more than just an image. It can damage ones self esteem as well, thinking about all the things you can possibly do when you are highly intoxicated is something of a revelation to people sometimes. But even more dangerous than drunk texting would be to do something online, the Internet never forgets, and incidents like those can cause irrevocable damage to a someone’s career, life etc.

Coming home drunk and then go online can bring you lots of fun, but also lots of problems second day. This is a small list of things you should avoid doing on Internet if you are drunk, of course I am sure there are more, but lets start with these few.

Respond to anything to do with work

It goes without saying, that you should not do this, but well, being intoxicated judgement is the first thing that gets impaired. No matter how capable you think you are, just don’t do it. Any mistake will be instantly explained by the 4am reply time. Besides, alcohol breeds carelessness, and ending an email to an attractive co-worker with a pun on how she’s good at “every job there is” with a winky-face is definitely not a good idea.

Chat with family members

Just because your weird uncle on the other part of the world got off work does not mean that it’s the perfect time to organize that trip he’s always been bugging you about. This will come back to haunt you in the form of an uncle at your door, and you not knowing what you promised.

Change your Password

Of all the things to forget about the previous night, the fact that your email’s new password is “Ilovecutecatsxxx” is one of the most costly things to forget, especially when your email is something that has all your personal stuff in it.

Use your credit card

No, don’t order that Star Wars costume off of eBay that would be perfect for that Geek party and no, you don’t need to sign up to three more porno sites.

Describe your level of Intoxication on a status Update

Look, everybody out that saw how drunk you are. Everyone online going to see how drunk you were when you’re tagged the next morning in a sequence of photos illustrating your attempt to chug a mixture of vodka and apple sauce. Nobody needs to be reminded via an intentionally misspelled status update.

Email an Ex

It’s like texting, except you can fit a hell of a lot more in. While a text message limits you to a simple “want 2 see u” or at the maximum 160 characters in the text, an email can easily turn into a seemingly appropriate compliment that “ur way better at kissing than ur sister.”

How is Google helping

If you are using Gmail you are in luck, Google Engineers have built 2 features into their flagship email service, Gmail. For the first feature, Google wants to make sure you never again send an email that you later wish you could take back. Problem is, once that angry letter or drunken confession flies out of your outbox, the damage has been done and it’s only a matter of time before the recipient reads it. If only there could have been someone by your side to force you to solve math problems before allowing you to send that email! Wait, what?

Now there will be, and it’s called Mail Googles. Once enabled, Mail Goggles will subject you to a handful of math equations that must be answered before that email can be whisked away for good.

“When you enable Mail Goggles, it will check that you’re really sure you want to send that late night Friday email,” writes Jon Perlow, a Gmail engineer. “And what better way to check than by making you solve a few simple math problems after you click send to verify you’re in the right state of mind?”

Additionally, just about everybody has sent an email, noticed a mistake as they hit the “send” button and wanted to call it back. Google’s Gmail now gives users a brief window to do just that. An “Undo Send” feature introduced in Google’s email program holds a message for five seconds before sending it.

Gmail’s sent mail confirmation message now includes an “Undo” link. Clicking on “Undo” will return a message to its draft form. The feature does not, however, allow a user to recall a message that’s already been sent.  ”It just holds your message for five seconds so you have a chance to hit the panic button,” Google said in a post on Thursday on the official Gmail blog announcing the new feature.
