A Facebook ‘Killer’ from Google ?

Posted by misterjester on 24 August 2010 2 Comments

Yes, I am at it again, writing about Google and Facebook. Aren’t we all talking about them in the tech field, well anyway. Google has grown too big for its own sake, it seems that the jumpy teenager has now become a monster, still agile but not enough, what this means is that the ability of Google to put special interest in the part projects of its employees is decreasing. Well or that is definitely what it looks like. When was the last time we heard of a major Google Launch on the web, might have been wave and that’s that. Honestly Google has done a lot more on the mobile platform ‘Android’ and I think is having to spend the rest of the time battling Apple and fighting law suits. Its deviated from the sole reason that people all over the world adore it, innovation.

Its slowly loosing ground to Facebook, not only in terms of no of visitors monthly, but also in terms of revenue which is the main source through which Google was able to innovate so well and provide so many services to all of us for free.

Social Media, might just be the two words that nearly everyone in the Google office is afraid of. Their foray into Social Networking has not been the best. From Orkut, Buzz to Google Wave, all of them at some point were given the title ‘Facebook Killer’. Havent hear dof them ? well here are some videos that might help.

Having burnt their fingers in two ventures (Buzz and Wave) and by loosing heavily in the original offering (Orkut), Google seems to be hurting badly. That and the announcement of Facebook that they have over 500 Million Members might be giving the guys at Google some really sleepless nights. Getting back to this new Facebook Killer that I am reffering to ?  It all started with a tweet from Kevin Rose, the Founder of Digg. Here is the tweet for you to see.

Google Me ? Yes well that seems to be the name of the service that Google is launching soon as its face against Facebook. If you do a quick search on the Internet you will see that an Ex-Chief Technical Officer has confirmed this news as well, add to it Google’s interest in Zynga the makers of Farmville and Other Applications on Facebook it is slowly getting clear that the Search Engine Giant is working on something Big ! This will be a defining movement on Google’s future, a wrong product and a wrong step here might just lead it towards doom, where are a positive reaction to it, would mean that Google will continue leading the web and the internet.

An ideal situation would be that Google Acquires Facebook, but considering the price tag of Facebook, it seems highly improbable that Google might be able to do so, however, they are going for the next best thing it seems that, make another one. I am hoping for Google’s sake they will be able to make a good one.

Considering the amount of information that Google has about each of us, they would be able to make a great site, personalized and absolutely stunning considering what they can do with HTML5 seen in wave and buzz. All in all this might be a good thing. But again, I know a lot of people might be saying, that its releasing too much information into the hands of Google. Whats the worst that could happen ? There could be a range of more services that spring out of Google. Some that I can imagine (pun intended of course) would be :

Google Radar

This powerful mashup of Google Places, Android, Google Latitude, and Google Maps, builds you a map with the real time location of your friends.

Google Friends

Still choosing your friends by default, by filtering people in your geographic neighborhood? This new tool will allow you to find people whose tastes match yours, hence likely to become your buddy and enjoy with you the activities you like. More like discover who you should friends based on your interests.

Google Twin

The huge number of tagged photos uploaded to Facebook allowed us to create a database containing the most important physiological properties of users. Using some sophisticated pattern matching routines, Google Twin will help you to locate people looking really like you, like a brother or a sister, in fact.

Google Reality

Wearing their special goggles will offer you a new way to experience reality. Some customizable tags will inform you about almost every detail in your visual field and your surrounding, including of course people. Also known as Augmented Reality, will be taking off from Google Goggles.

Other solutions might be Google Face, similar to Google Twin, who helps to create facial composites and to find some matching individuals. On another hand, Google Suspects, claiming Better safe than sorry, will analyze correlations between online profiles and criminal records to detect potential future misdemeanors. (Minority Report Anyone)

Google CVcheck, Google PatentHole and Google Intelligence concentrate on industries and Google Lie Detector for normal people will help keep track of credibility of people. They might even propose specific expertise, like Google Risk for insurance companies, or Google Score for banks and credit issuers.

All in a Google world, for now the first step would have to be Facebook, and we all know its a big step.
