Visual Resume – why and how ?

Traditionally we are taught through our college systems and our surroundings especially for the scenario of the first job. All of us are not really sure about what to provide as information and what would impress. Reducing 20 years of your learning and adolescent years into a sheet of paper is always going to be difficult. And to make this unsure, a lot of people get into the bad habit of making use of templates from Microsoft Word, which are used by a billion other people.

The best way might be to use some of the templates, but ensure that they would go online to check a visual resume that you have prepared. I know that a lot of you guys are thinking, its not for me. That is exactly why its for you. Not everyone will adapt into it, and it will give you your canvas to draw out your life in form of slides, adding another dimension to your resume. Have I convinced you yet ? No ?? Guess I will have to use this presentation for it.

In the above slides, @jessedee offers some good and compelling advice on why you need to make a visual resume and how you can go about creating one using presentation software that you probably already have on your computer.

A visual resume is obviously not any replacement for traditional resumes yet but it can certainly help you accentuate your achievements and education better. Meaning, your traditional resume can be a way for you to direct someone to go ahead and look at your Visual resume that you have added online.

I know some of you guys will need some inspiration, to get some ideas. However, I would suggest you to look at these only as inspiration, else the entire exercise would have lost its meaning. A visual resume is something that should be personal to reflect you only.

World’s best Presentations – 2010 which was one of my most frequented websites a couple of years back to learn everything from Social Media to well Green Awareness campaigns, hosts every year a competition for the world’s best PowerPoint presentations. And believe you me, these presentations are nothing less than a feat themselves, to be picked out of over 5000 presentations which include presentation guru’s like Seth Godin and Garr Reynolds, is an honor by itself.

For those of you who have not yet looked at this is good time to do so. To cure the world from death by PowerPoint, it is really important to start using some really interesting techniques that are mentioned in various presentations on the site. If you look at them carefully, there are at least three elements common among all the winning entries – the use of large fonts, there’s very little amount of text used in slides and you’ll find no more than one picture in each slide and it often fills up the entire space.

In fact, you can also slowly be able to present as elegantly as Steve Jobs. Well I understand that there are many different faucets to his presentations, however the actual slides can be as good as what he does.

Getting back to the Presentations that are really outstanding, presentations that have been picked as the World’s best from the visitors and the Judges alike, here are the 3 best :

Apart from these if you would still want to check on my world’s best presentations, you can check out my share of presentations on, you can check it out here.

Was Earth Hour worthwhile ?

First things first, I want to make it clear that I ma a big supporter of the green cause and environment is a priority for me as it should be for the entire planet. I do support the earth hour initiative as well, in fact I had my lights off yesterday. For about an hour we at home switched everything off and got outside. However, how many of you readers have actually done the same ? I would say not as many. Because a few ‘educated’ friends of ours that we know did not really have their lights turned off.

I am not a supporter of Earth Hour because it will be the only focus for too many.  Turning off lights for one hour is meaningless unless it is coupled with many other longer-term actions. Consider this:  Many will participate in this event and will feel good about being a part of something world-wide.  Most of those will then go about doing their same things without a second thought about making systemic changes that will cause real change to occur.

While there will be a signficant drop in demand in the electrical demand during this one hour period, do any of us think that there will be any drop in electrical production during the same period-NO, there will not. The focus here is should be one of education, process and long-term change, not another feel-good event that will be publicized and talked up by the celebrity types and then forgotten as they hop into their personal jets and energy wasting vehicles.

Let’s think about Earth Month or Earth Year. Let’s work on the fundamentals first. Here is a presentation I had added on about 2 years ago, that lists out some simple and plausible actions that need to be done.

Unless there is considerable action and really a forward step towards a global political agreement regarding the Earth Hour seems to be another excuse for a T-Shirt with consumerism as well as enough candles burnt that can actually help the cause in other countries where candles are sparse at least. Well, tell me what you think ?

Now your face is your Business Card

[tweetmeme] Interestingly, I wrote about the Augmented Reality Business Card a few days back talking about how Augmented Reality is getting into business cards in ways that makes them more interesting and really awesome. Check out the previous post on the same here. Well now, Polarrose has come up with a solution where one’s face can be used now as a Social Business Card along with TAT (The Astonishing Tribe).

The concept video from Polar Rose on You tube has received over 400,000 views so far as the “Augmented ID” combines Augmented Reality and with Face Recognition, to deliver the worlds first AR application that recognizes people seen by the mobile phone’s camera in realtime and displays icons around their heads with direct links to the person’s profiles on sites such as Facebook, LinkedIn, YouTube, Slideshare and others.

The technology is breakthrough because it will help designers now look to more than just the ugly black marks (sort of ugly) to pull up Augmented Information, if it can work with faces (Which are quite complex) they can be used with normal shapes such as brand logos, objects etc.

The first biggest step since the introduction of the Augmented Reality technological previews.
