Wordless Thursday – Apple vs Apples

If you have been following this blog for a while, by now you will know that Thursday’s is a good day for Infographics around here. Well although I am not writing as much as I would like to, it seems like my personal favorite section to write about. The beauty of Infographics stems from the simplicity to represent lots and lots of information in a very fun to read way.

This week’s Wordless Thursday is an interesting infographic about Apple vs the Apples. Although they both are from different worlds in our world, The artist has really picked the interesting similarities.  This infographic is really a  good example of how fun infographics can be made.

How To Use An iPhone 4s Application To Manage Your Finances

The new iPhone 4S, amazing, capable of more than anything before it, and its able to help you manage your finances as well?  I thought coming up with Siri was a major accomplishment, and now Siri can help you manage your finances. Let’s take a look Siri and what it offers in the way of financial management:

Siri is an Intelligent Assistant that just debuted in the newest Apple iPhone, the 4s.  It allows you to give voice commands and receive the information your looking for such as a local restaurant, text, phone call, weather forecast, and so much more.

Pay bills on time:

You can ask Siri to remind you of upcoming payments, including amount and due date.  You can even set an alarm so that you can’t forget a payment is due, and sync her with the newest application RememberTheMilk so you can organize your financial obligations as well as important dates.

Keep track of stock rates:

Even though Siri cannot give you ‘insider’ information, it can certainly let you know what your stock is doing, by answering a simple question, such as ‘How are Coca Cola’ stocks doing?  You can get the latest stock updates on any stock that you choose.

Find closest ATM or Bank:

This is what Siri is best at – finding locations and giving you options.  But if you ask for a specific bank, you can get that address and location as well.

Personal finances:

When you’re out shopping, having lunch or just out spending money, Siri can tell you whether you’re close to your spending limit in your bank account, or if you’re over your budget.  Installing a third party sync to Siri of your bank account through a site such as Mint.com, can help you from overspending.

Moneystrands:

This is an amazing iPhone app that can give you all of your bank and credit card balances, all in one place.  And, offers a pretty up to date budget tool.  I can’t tell you how convenient this is, when we’re used to having to call the credit card companies to get balances before we charge.

This is a free app and can be found at moneystrands.

Pageonce Personal Assistant:

This allows financial monitoring from your iPhone, with access to bank, credit card and brokerage accounts from your phone.  It allows you to access all of your bills, in one simple app, and you can pay them from Pageonce as well.

One of the greatest features of this app is that it is secure, with top security measures taken, you can do your banking, financial monitoring, and bill paying all in the safety of your phone.

Best of all – it’s FREE!

Pocket Money:

This isn’t a free app, however, its not expensive.  Last check it was $1.99 and will probably go down from there.

This little app does so much, such as tracking accounts, budgeting, keeping track of spending and it actually backs up and exports financial data.  It can handle split transactions and exports data to programs such as Quicken.

Bloomberg:

If you’re an investor, this is the app for you!  The Bloomberg iPhone app offers investment tools and real-time portfolio tracking, all for free.

You can also receive news, according to date and time, and it is available in 12 different languages.

And… it is free here!

PayPal:

You can send money from your iPhone through your account on PayPal.  If that person is on your contact list in your phone, you can send them cash.  And, there are over 190 currencies available, and in 16 different languages.

This is also a free application – PayPal

Shopping Budgeter:

This little app, Gift List Budget Shopper, can actually help you save money by budgeting for gift giving, finding the cheapest price for the product you’re looking for as well as locate it for you, and conduct product searches online.

It integrates with your address book and maps, creates lists that can be exported to the spreadsheet of your choice, and can be backed up.

Gift List Budget Shopper isn’t free, last check, $3.99 and reviews state it is worth every penny!

Currency Converter:

This handy app will help you know exactly what you’re being charged in that bistro in France, or in nearly 200 other countries.

You can convert currency rates in seconds on this ACTCurrency iPhone Currency Converter, and never wonder whether you over paid again.

And, as a bonus, since the rates change regularly, you can get updated exchange rates via wi-fi while you’re travelling.

And, the cost –  .99 cents.

“iPad Killers” from India

The Indian consumer electronics industry is going through a bit of a overhaul. From “Indian” Mobile Phones to various innovative gadgets, the Indian Electronics Industry is definitely giving a good fight to the international players in India like the Nokia’s, the Samsung’s, the LG’s and the likes. It was all play nice, we are the new kids on the block, until they started to make a dent in the markets of these guys. Most of us know that Nokia has not been performing in the smart phone segment, the world’s largest mobile phone manufacturer has its strength in the low cost mobile sector, and that is now being challenged by the likes of Maxx Mobiles,Karbon Mobiles, MicroMax and others.

But looks like Indian Companies are not just happy with making a dent. They are now going for the Mother load, Apple and the likes. If you have been reading this blog for a while, you will know about my obsession with the Innovation in India as well as a bit of a hatred with the iPad. What sparked off this post is actually a re look into the Indian Pioneer who decided to take on the Pi, Infibeam. And what surprised me was that they have an iPad lookalike ready, running both Android and Windows as optional. Yes, you did hear that right ! I thought it would make a nice look at these so called, “iPad Killers” from India. So, here goes.

Impact of iPhone 4 on the Sex Industry

In one of the TV advertisements for Apple’s Face Time, a soldier uses the feature to get a look at his far away wife’s ultrasound pictures. But the adult industry wants its customers to share moments of an entirely different kind with its stars. If the history of the Internet has shown us one thing, it’s that any attempt to place a wall between porn and the raging tide of user erections is the definition of futility – for each one you strike down, another one springs up stronger than the first.

To be very honest, the Porn industry has made use f the technology world to the maximum and also has had a big impact on it, VCRs became widespread due to the adult industry and the industry was amongst the first to embrace DVDs as well.

Your wallet may soon disappear into your phone

Personally being involved in many discussions, I believe that mos people interested in technology have at some time or the other wondered about the integration of your wallet into your mobile. I am talking about payments to be done through the mobile, or use he mobile as your ID card ? Well if the tech giants of the world have anything to say, it might happen more sooner than you might think. After replacing many of the small gadgets that you might use, and provide additional functionality into the phone like, camera (Check out 18 innovative uses of that phone camera here) , FM Transmitter and receiver, gaming device and many more; the phone giants staring with Apple are now looking to completely replace your wallet into your mobile.

This magic technology is called NFC or near field communication. Although the possibility of doing this has been evident for a long time using RFID tags, its just now. But NFC is coming over in a big way to a mobile near you; all courtesy to Apple. Yes, we know people are suckers for anything Steve Jobs seems to be making and selling including the ridiculous iPad. The Wii, Move and Kinetic making your living room a playground

It was the year 2006, and the gaming industry was in the grasp of the PlayStation and Xbox along with the PC, but Gaming on these devices was not for everyone and the games were getting really monotonous with similar themes and functions, then came the Wii, Nintendo’s answer to Sony’s PlayStation and the Microsoft Xbox, the Wii bought with it the controller that could very well define the next stage in man machine interface for gaming. The simplicity of using a controller to interact physically with your TV was something that even newbie gamers could not resist. The success of the Wii is not only clear from the sales but also in the fact that the 2 biggest competitors in Sony and Microsoft decided to give a shot to their own versions of the Wii Controllers.

If it was Apple, they would have patented the control technique and not let competition, rather Nintendo fuelled competition by letting their competitors come up with alternate versions as they perfected and improved on the controller and the games and offering for the Wii Console. Starting from tennis, boxing, to fitness application with the Wii Fit, Nintendo has changed the ‘fat boy’ look of the traditional gamer into a normal person who likes any sort of physical activity. This in itself is a feat matching no other. The Control adopted in the gesture controllers might be taken a step ahead based on what Intel is trying to achieve, with the new remote controller for the TV. But, before we go there, here is a small preview of the 3 gesture controllers available in the market today.

My new Toy, the Nexus One

Yes, I got one. Most of you will already know my obsession with Google and Google Products, I am an avid reader and propaganda person when it comes to Google, so it was not a surprise that I did pick the Nexus One as my new Phone. Ever since I bought my first phone, it has always been a Nokia I have gone through quite a few Nokia Phones in the past few years, starting with the 3310, 6610, 6230i, N85 and my last phone which was the N95 8GB. Its been a while since I have been looking for a worthy opponent to Nokia’s best offering so far, thought about the N97 which I thought was great hardware but sloppy software, and even the N900 which again I hesitated to buy cos of the software, Maemo did not last more than 1 device. Nokia lost focus somewhere in the way, although I believe that in the emerging markets they are a tough competition the smart phone segment which seems like the most growing, Nokia is caught unaware. Now I could have waited for the N8, but then the software problems being the last Symbian device would be too much to ignore. All in all with a lot of reluctance I left the Nokia camp.

Android is coming and iPhone will be sorry

If you have been living under a rock for the past year or just woke up from a coma and don’t know what the android is, It is the mobile operating system from Google which is open source and free to use both for phone manufacturers as well as users. Which means that the operating system will enable manufacturers provide devices for a fraction of a cost cheaper than proprietary operating systems like the iPhone OS. So straight off its already better than its apple counterpart, add to it the openness of the platform to add what ever you need as applications makes it even more competitive and flexible. DOnt know what I am talking about? try getting another browser for your iPhone or run a flash based website or a flash based tool on iPhone … not possible. But with the android its all good. Now, android is from Google, which for me tips the scale here add to it Google’s participation in developing the Nexus One and various applications for the platform and you have just the iPhone killer that you are looking for.

I am writing this after I just saw the Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 in Dubai, I was more than impressed. If I were not waiting for the Nexus One to reach Dubai, I would have already bought it. The point is I was seriously impressed by the speed and the reactiveness of the phone and the OS. A recent report on Engadget made it visible that Android as an Operating system is now ahead of iPhone in the American Market and just behind the revered Blackberry OS. Unfortunately, there are’nt enough Android Phones in Dubai for me to be able to make a comparison in the local market or for that matter the Indian Market is the same. So, just getting everyone prepared for the onslaught of the Android I am posting a list of applications for the Android that would rival some of the best on the iPhone.
