World’s best Presentations – 2010

Slideshare.net which was one of my most frequented websites a couple of years back to learn everything from Social Media to well Green Awareness campaigns, hosts every year a competition for the world’s best PowerPoint presentations. And believe you me, these presentations are nothing less than a feat themselves, to be picked out of over 5000 presentations which include presentation guru’s like Seth Godin and Garr Reynolds, is an honor by itself.

For those of you who have not yet looked at slideshare.net this is good time to do so. To cure the world from death by PowerPoint, it is really important to start using some really interesting techniques that are mentioned in various presentations on the site. If you look at them carefully, there are at least three elements common among all the winning entries – the use of large fonts, there’s very little amount of text used in slides and you’ll find no more than one picture in each slide and it often fills up the entire space.

In fact, you can also slowly be able to present as elegantly as Steve Jobs. Well I understand that there are many different faucets to his presentations, however the actual slides can be as good as what he does.

Getting back to the Presentations that are really outstanding, presentations that have been picked as the World’s best from the visitors and the Judges alike, here are the 3 best :

Apart from these if you would still want to check on my world’s best presentations, you can check out my share of presentations on Slideshare.net, you can check it out here.

The most expensive Home Theatre in the world

I got an interesting mail with the pics for the most expensive Home Theatre in the world, and let me tell you something it was worth writing a post about. Once I received the pictures I started getting more and more curious about the composition of the system. The Kipnis Studio Standard Experience, also known as “The Greatest Show on Earth” is exactly the most expensive Home theatre in the world. I don’t really know what to actually say about this awesome gadget, a big waste of money or a true piece of art, but I am inclined to think that $6,000,000 is way to much for a home theatre, you could do a lot more than just a Home Theatre in that money.  Now let’s see a few details that make this home theater so amazing.

First of all the person who spent the money and the effort on this monstrocity. Jeremy Kipnis, a music engineer, producer, classical music lover, has paid a whooping US $6 million for this amazing collection. And you have seen nothing yet. Wait until you find out what gadgets make this home theater so top notch.

Picture Elements:

  • Sony SRX-S110 Professional Video Projector (4,096-by-2,160 resolution)
  • Stewart 18-by-10-foot Snowmatte 1.0 Gain Laboratory-Grade Motion Picture Screen

Players and Sources:

  • Sony BDP-S1 Blu-ray Player
  • Sony PlayStation 3 Gaming Console
  • Toshiba HD-XA1 HD DVD Player
  • JVC HMDH-5U D-VHS Recorder
  • SATA Drive (72 HDTV Hours Total)
  • Mark Levinson Reference N°33 and N°33H.
  • Pioneer HLD-X0 Hi-Vision HDTV MUSE Laserdisc Player

Surround Processing and Decoding:

  • Theta Digital Generation VIII 32-bit 8x Oversampling Dual Processors (13)

Amplification:

  • Mark Levinson N° 33h Amplifiers (2)
  • McIntosh MC-2102 Amplifiers (30)
  • Crown Macro Reference Gold Amplifiers (3)

Speakers:

  • Snell 1800 THX Music & Cinema Reference Subwoofers (16)
  • Snell THX Music & Cinema Reference Towers (8)
  • MuRata ES103A Super Tweeters (10)
  • Snell THX Music & Cinema Reference LCR-2800 Center-Channel Speakers (3)

Look at these awesome pictures that will complete the experience of ooh and ahs, we will then talk more about why this beats going to the theatre.

Now lets get to the list of why this really makes going to the Theatre crappy :

The Cell Phone That Goes Off

Honestly, with all the messages we see during the previews that mention how NOT to have your cell phone on during the movie?  How in the world is this still going on in theaters?  Not only that, whenever the damn thing rings at least three times it’s usually cause for murder.  No question.  Giant sign:  TURN CELL PHONES OFF.  Cell phone still rings.  How?  How?

The Tall Person

This is just the luck of the draw I guess.  I’m 6’0 tall so I doubt that I’ve caused trouble for those behind me.  And I have to say theatres have made advancements in seating.  However, if someone is 6’5 or taller you are absolutely screwed.  And if you’re in a crowded theater, God help you.  Ever watch an entire movie with your head tilted?  Its not very nice.

The Talker or Laugher

I didn’t realize how many people thought that a movie theater was their own personal living room.  Not only that, sometimes you get the people that actually speak just to piss other people off.  The worst thing is when you get a group of people that are either drunk or stoned. I guess its fun for them, but at the expense of the rest of us.

The No Seat Situation

You know what that means.  It means you’re sitting in the front which is about the worst possible thing that could happen to you at the theater other than being vomited on, the theater collapsing on your head, or having exploding diarrhea. Aching necks, twisted eyes and tears accompany such a trip to the theatre.

No matter what said and done, spending 6 Million Dollars on a Home Theatre is not something that beats going to the theatres, but surely getting a good system will make the experience at home more personal and better.

Facebook working on a Mobile phone ?

This is one news that really might come as a surprise to some people and very inquisitive to some more people, FaceBook launching its own mobile phone. Sometime last year when someone told that Google was  working on a phone, Like me a lot of people called it rumors and laughed it off. A few months back I got that very phone. After Google launched the Nexus One, it has made such a big difference to the mobile phone industry, where there seems to be someone catching up on the pace that the iPhone OS was running ahead with.

Telecoms industry is undergoing a really huge change, the likes of which has not been seen before. Who would have thought % years back that 2 software giants Google and Apple would revolutionize the telecoms industry. I guess Facebook is not really happy with just having apps on the Symbian, iPhone and Android platform.

Your password is easy to crack …

If you’re like most people, you have a few passwords that you use over and over again on many different websites. You know this isn’t secure, yet you do it anyway. Why? Because it’s difficult to remember a unique password for each and every web site that requires one.

The use of good, hard-to-guess passwords can make it difficult for a malicious hacker to break into your computer account. Avoiding predictable keywords and using different methods to introduce variety into your passwords makes it easy for you to remember them but virtually impossible for others to guess them.

First of all, check how strong your password really is. Head over to http://www.passwordmeter.com/ or here and if you password shows as strong I think you dont really need to worry about too many things, if however it shows that your password is kinda weak, medium or really weak, then here are some tips on creating winning passwords.

The world’s most expensive car wash from an Indian !!

Yes, we are doing it again. Take something that you would not pay too much for and make it absolutely valuable. This car wash coming in at a cost of close to 7500 Pounds or AED 40000 or Indian Rupees 5,00,000. Exuberant. And my friends keep cribbing that they pay too much to their car wash guy in Dubai. Thirty-year-old car enthusiast Gurcharn Sahota takes up to 250 hours to systematically clean each vehicle with 100 cleaning fluids and wax and he ends up polishing the car inside and out five times. There is a surprise element to finish off the wash, read on to know more, and what does he do for the wash to make it special.

When engineers have way too much time

First things first, here is a high five to all the engineers out there reading this, cos you guys know you are awesome. And the rest of the guys reading this, you guys are great too, just that being an engineer brings out some extra brotherhood among other engineers [ please note that brotherhood does not imply there are no women engineers, just that me saying sisterhood would have sounded very gay ! 😉 ]. Hmm, now that THAT is out of the way, this post definitely was done out of sheer inspiration at the genius of two guys, who well have too much free time.

Engineers don’t really come off as the artistic kind, we guys usually come off more nerdy and dorky. But generally there is a side of us that is definitely artistic, all those of you laughing, please see the photo blogs of my engineer friends and maybe even mine, or if you are in Dubai you could take a drive or a walk down to the Burj Dubai (Khalifa) and look at the fountain playing out “Time to say Goodbye”, it is really beautiful. You could even look at the same song made by the same engineers who made the Dubai Fountain, working the fountain at the Belagio in Las Vegas; and that is awesome too.

TV : Idiot Box no more – TED is Coming

If you did not know about the TED initiative, its a good way and time to find out about it. The TED foundation is a non profit organization that believes that the great minds and ideas should be accessible to all. It aims to provide a platform for the world’s smartest thinkers, greatest visionaries and most-inspiring teachers, so that millions of people can gain a better understanding of the biggest issues faced by the world, and a desire to help create a better future. Core to this goal is a belief that there is no greater force for changing the world than a powerful idea. Consider:

  • An idea can be created out of nothing except an inspired imagination.
  • An idea weighs nothing.
  • It can be transferred across the world at the speed of light for virtually zero cost.
  • And yet an idea, when received by a prepared mind, can have extraordinary impact.
  • It can reshape that mind’s view of the world.
  • It can dramatically alter the behavior of the mind’s owner.
  • It can cause the mind to pass on the idea to others.

Today, I’m thrilled to write about TED’s newest initative in sharing great ideas with the world: theOpen TV Project, which will bring TEDTalks to broadcast TV networks around the globe. Launched in May 2010, the TED Open TV Project allows broadcasters worldwide to air TEDtalks for free, provided they follow basic guidelines (no editing, interrupting or showing commercials during the talks). Licensed broadcasters will have permission not only to air the talks, but also create programs around them — for example, using local hosts to introduce or wrap up the talks. It’s truly open-source TV.

What Fonts are the most environment friendly?

What has a font got to do with environment friendliness you ask ? Well the amount of Ink that you would use to write on a piece of paper or print on a piece of paper is completely dependent on the font. To demonstrate this capability Designers Matt Robinson and Tom Wrigglesworth looked at ink usage of some commonly-used typefaces, by hand-drawing them with ballpoint pens.

Its Magic !!

What happens to a bunch of grown up engineers when a magician comes along and sweeps them off their feet. Well guess what ? They get thinking logically how does that trick work and debate over it. Thats exactly what happened when we guys from work, had an outing to the Mall of the Emirates this Saturday.
Rather than enjoying the show we were endlessly wondering of the abilities and the how did he do that. Atleast i know i did. Seeing the video, the strongest voice is mine, cos i recorded the whole thing on my N80. Well as interesting as it may seem, there seems to be a trick somewhere ! This is exactly what we were thinking.
Guess some things are better left alone without thinking how. this is one of them.
