iClone – Better than the iPhone

No I am not going to be talking about the Android phones and how awesome they are, although they are. Neither am I going to talk about the N8 which might be Nokia’s sorry attempt at reviving the smartphone (Although its not the fault of the hardware, its the Symbian). I am talking about genuine clones of the iPhone and how they provide in some cases a better phone than what is considered now the holy grail of mobile phones. Cut to, China.

One of my previous colleagues from China used to tell me all the time, you throw anything into Shanghai, and they will throw 2 clones back, one a cheap one and another inexpensive one. The inexpensive one is the one of interest as more often than not, they also come with many additional features.

My new Toy, the Nexus One

Yes, I got one. Most of you will already know my obsession with Google and Google Products, I am an avid reader and propaganda person when it comes to Google, so it was not a surprise that I did pick the Nexus One as my new Phone. Ever since I bought my first phone, it has always been a Nokia I have gone through quite a few Nokia Phones in the past few years, starting with the 3310, 6610, 6230i, N85 and my last phone which was the N95 8GB. Its been a while since I have been looking for a worthy opponent to Nokia’s best offering so far, thought about the N97 which I thought was great hardware but sloppy software, and even the N900 which again I hesitated to buy cos of the software, Maemo did not last more than 1 device. Nokia lost focus somewhere in the way, although I believe that in the emerging markets they are a tough competition the smart phone segment which seems like the most growing, Nokia is caught unaware. Now I could have waited for the N8, but then the software problems being the last Symbian device would be too much to ignore. All in all with a lot of reluctance I left the Nokia camp.

Android is coming and iPhone will be sorry

If you have been living under a rock for the past year or just woke up from a coma and don’t know what the android is, It is the mobile operating system from Google which is open source and free to use both for phone manufacturers as well as users. Which means that the operating system will enable manufacturers provide devices for a fraction of a cost cheaper than proprietary operating systems like the iPhone OS. So straight off its already better than its apple counterpart, add to it the openness of the platform to add what ever you need as applications makes it even more competitive and flexible. DOnt know what I am talking about? try getting another browser for your iPhone or run a flash based website or a flash based tool on iPhone … not possible. But with the android its all good. Now, android is from Google, which for me tips the scale here add to it Google’s participation in developing the Nexus One and various applications for the platform and you have just the iPhone killer that you are looking for.

I am writing this after I just saw the Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 in Dubai, I was more than impressed. If I were not waiting for the Nexus One to reach Dubai, I would have already bought it. The point is I was seriously impressed by the speed and the reactiveness of the phone and the OS. A recent report on Engadget made it visible that Android as an Operating system is now ahead of iPhone in the American Market and just behind the revered Blackberry OS. Unfortunately, there are’nt enough Android Phones in Dubai for me to be able to make a comparison in the local market or for that matter the Indian Market is the same. So, just getting everyone prepared for the onslaught of the Android I am posting a list of applications for the Android that would rival some of the best on the iPhone.

The Evolution of Computing viewed through Apple Ads

All of us know how computers have evolved within our lifetimes. In fact, the other day in the office we had a discussion about what was the configuration of the first computer that each one had. And by today’s standards we did not even have toys. The evolution of computers within the Home has also improved, and the internet adding to additional push.

In today’s post we will look at how computers have evolved through the eyes of Apple Ads for the famous Mac. You will notice that off late the computing platform that they are advertising more is the hand held platforms. This is an indication towards the next evolutionary step in computing, bringing the internet and computing resources closer to us all the time.

Most of Apple’s current advertising seems to be on TV these days. You can watch most of the recent ads on the Apple website.

Game changing gadgets from Apple … whats next ?

Just like the story about the person who could turn anything to gold, anything apple seems to be doing seems to be the ‘Next big thing’. Most gadgets that they bought out in the recent past have been received with amazing enthusiasm world over. The iPod and the iPhone are two amazing examples of Apple technologies making it as big as the gadgets can be.  Although there are better ‘MP3 Players’ available in the market they are just that, they can just aspire to be an iPod. Similarly various companies world over are trying really hard to come up with the perfect ‘iPhone Killer’ and even the Silicon valley giant Google, is attempting to get there; the Nexus One. I will post about it as soon as I see one in action, hands on. Keeping this in mind when Apple announces new gadgets, I guess it is for all of us to stand up and take notice.

The Apple Tablet called iSlate or iPad ?

Apple is preparing to show off a new, larger mobile device with a higher resolution display this month, probably a version of the Apple tablet. This could be in addition to a 10- to 11-inch tablet the company has supposedly been working on. I assume that their patented multi-touch screen technology will eventually penetrate more Apple product lines, including portable Macs and maybe even desktop Macs. But for the time being as long as they have the patent for the multi touch screen application, they are willing to make the most of it. Here are some pictures of the supposedly called ‘iSlate‘ or ‘iPad’. Supposedly Apple is putting up a demo so that their developers can have a look at these devices and build software for a large screen HD display.

In face apple has gone a step forward to make it more interesting and asked people that are invited to the launch to guess on the specifications of the device, and might win a chance of winning a tablet in case they guess it right. Check out the survey form here. The touch tablet might take on the likes of the first commercial production eBook reader, the Amazon Kindle, owing to Apple approaching publishing houses and might even come up with an Apple App store kind of a storefront for books.

Apple HMD Goggles

The January issue of Mac Life sports a fauxtograph of possible Apple augmented reality HMD glasses. It’s hard to know how much of this article is based on concept, but Apple working on an AR HMD would be a huge jumpstart to the nascent technology. Apparently in mid-April of 2008, Apple published a patent for a “Head Mounted Display System.”  The patent shows screens and fiber optics and vision imaging controls.  Given Apple’s trademark secrecy, it’s a huge unknown if MacLife’s article is pure speculation or its based on some real knowledge. Imagining that Apple might introduce this gadget by the end of this year to get into the market early to also make use of all the great augmented reality applications that are bound to hit the marketplace this year.

Apple is demonstrating the most important part of business, especially during the recession. Innovation and Design. We have to hand it to Steve Jobs for his innovative products and even more innovative presentation and keynote presentations for the launch of their products.

Phonetography .. the best camera ?

One of the most famous quotes about photography that I have ever seen, was on the site called IPhone as Art.

“ The camera is an instrument that teaches people how to see without a camera.” – Dorothea Lange

Searching for a Snowy Owl

Just as writers just write something anything to keep their skills sharp, photographers also need to practice all the time. Well for most practical purposes it is not very simple carrying around an SLR camera around with you to shoot photos and to practice. So the humble mobile / camera phone has taken over the place of the scribble pad for photographers. And believe it or not, its not just good for getting photos of that scandalous MMS, but also amazing photos. Most of these sites are for pictures taken with iPhone, but my Nokia N95 is not far behind either.

The camera phone photography has become more than just a visual notebook, a journalistic record of events or a way to send friends photos of your dog. While most photographers will claim that they simply fell into shooting with their cell phones, saying, “What the heck, I’ve always got my phone with me,” it has rapidly evolved into a legitimate tool for artistic expression and has even shown up in commercial outlets, such as Robert Clark’s commissioned book Image America, shot entirely with his camera phone.

Have a look at these amazing sites based on the Mobile camera photography.
